Padres welcome Astros to Petco Park

Baseball Betting Lines

07/01/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The National League's best team, the San Diego Padres, welcome one of the worst teams in the league to town this evening when they begin a four-game series with the Houston Astros at Petco Park.

At 46-32 San Diego heads the NL West and is a half-game ahead of the Atlanta Braves for the best record in the Senior Circuit. The Astros, meanwhile, are tied for the second worst record in the league at 31-48.

However, Houston has picked up its play of late and ended June with a 14-14 record. The Astros broke even for the month on Wednesday, as Chris Johnson went 4-for-4 with a two-run double and Wandy Rodriguez threw seven strong innings, helping Houston to a 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the rubber match of a three-game set at Miller Park.

Lance Berkman chipped in an RBI double and Geoff Blum reached base four times with two hits, a pair of walks and scored three runs for the Astros, who won a combined 17 games through the first two months.

"It's pretty cool. I don't know how to explain it," Johnson said about his four-hit game. "I'm just trying to have good at-bats. We all tried to make the pitchers work in this series. It's nice to win a series on the road."

Rodriguez (5-10) scattered seven hits and allowed one run with a walk and fanned six. The lefty upped his record to 6-6 lifetime against Milwaukee in 16 games and improved to 2-6 in nine road starts this season. He also knocked in a run with a squeeze bunt.

Tonight the Astros will turn to veteran right-hander Brian Moehler, who is 1-4 with a 5.62 ERA. Moehler won for the first time this season on Friday in Texas, as he held the high-powered Rangers offense to two earned runs in five innings.

Moehler is 2-1 in nine games (five starts) against the Padres with a 3.18 ERA.

San Diego will counter with righty Jon Garland, who has won his last two starts after a three-game slide. Garland beat the Florida Marlins on Saturday, limiting them to a run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 8-5, while lowering his ERA to 3.13.

Garland tossed seven scoreless innings to beat the Astros back on May 13 and is 3-1 lifetime against them with a 3.00 ERA in six starts.

San Diego salvaged the finale of its three-game set with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, as Scott Hairston went 2-for-5 with four RBI, helping the Padres to a 13-3 rout. Clayton Richard (6-4) went seven innings and was charged with just two runs on five hits with a walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts. He also drove in two runs in the victory.

"It's big to avoid the sweep but that's how we've played," said Richard. "We understand not to push the panic button and we understand what it takes to win baseball games."

The Padres took two of three from the Astros earlier in the year, but Houston has won nine of the last 12 in the matchup, including three of the last four in San Diego.

Stanley Cup betting

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.

The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.

MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.

Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
